Curtains

There are so many sites and videos on the web. Something for everyone’s tastes and interests, from cat videos to fake snuff films. Everything is on the table if you know where to look. There is a big new craze almost every other day. The most recent website that had everyone buzzing was Curtains. A site that not only tells you when you are going to die but shows you how. It has everyone thrilled at the macabre nature of the site, and what it provides. The main attraction was the videos which showed how people would die. There was a lot of debate as to whether they were life-like animations or live actors, but everyone was in awe of the accuracy of the faces on the video. Somehow, the viewer was able to tell it was them even if they were to die of old age. Some deaths were rather peaceful, passing in one's sleep; others were the complete opposite. One video showed a woman burning to death in a car fire. It had a strange pull, like a magnet, drawing people from all walks of life to the site. People were curious about the how and when of their demise, and now it was a mouse click away. However, they were not able to confirm the accuracy of the site, no one was able to find the creator, and those who passed quickly couldn’t tell their tales. The mystery just added more fuel to the fire, with even more people flocking to the website.
One of those interested in the mystery was Daniel Campbell, a college student with an enormous curiosity. He heard that several of his friends had visited the site, talking about their videos at length. Daniel rushed to his computer the second he got to his dorm. He looked around before logging into the site, checking to ensure he was alone. The website was rather simple. There was just a background with white text, the only link was a box that contained the word: ENTER. Scrolling down revealed a disclaimer in the same white text: The information the website can provide may be distressing to most visitors. Knowing when and how Death will come can alter your life for its entirety. Prepare yourself for what you will see. Daniel was completely unbothered by the disclaimer, scrolling back up to the link and clicking it. Upon clicking the link, there was a bright flash. Daniel was nearly blinded, as the screen turned pure black. The white text began to type out information. Name, Date of birth, age, height, weight, blood type, occupation, and relatives. Daniel was shocked by the amount of data it had on him, and all of it was correct. He figured that flash was a photo, but to gain all this information from a picture. Then came the time and date of death, which required a confirmation to be revealed. Daniel, with fingers trembling with anticipation and fear, moved his mouse to give that confirmation and clicked.
He was caught off guard by the time and date of death, it was tonight at midnight. Then, the cause of death was written out with a white play button next to it. A shocked Daniel couldn’t help but click the play button. The video took up the whole screen of his laptop. Daniel was brought face to face with his horrified visage, staring at the laptop; on the top right corner was a two-minute timer. Then something came up behind him, the timer started to count down. The thing beat at Daniel’s chest and tore at his skin. When Daniel tried to fight the thing back, it broke the offending limb with a sickening crunch. As it beat Daniel to the floor, it quickly jumped onto his back and slammed his head into the ground. Over and over, cracking open Daniel’s skull and sending blood flying in all directions. As the timer reached zero, the thing left Daniel’s room. His body was left on the ground with brain matter oozing out of the cracked skull. Daniel watched his last breath leave his body as the timer hit zero. The window closed and returned the computer to its desktop. Daniel was locked in sheer terror after seeing his video. The only thing that was moving was his eyes as they drifted to the clock on his laptop, 11:58 P.M. Then he felt something breathe on his neck.
